Web site design and ease of navigation:
I think this website is very user friendly. The information located within the website is
very reliable and factual. I like how
all the subjects are broken up into different categories. When you click on a certain subject it takes
you to another screen with different categories of that subject.
I
think that it is also useful that you can view the subjects is different
languages. A downside to the different
languages is that not all of the subjects can be viewed in different
languages. Some can be viewed in
Portuguese, Italian or Spanish or one or the other. I think that if some of the links should be
viewed in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc, then all of them should be
too. I think more people will be able to
learn the information.
I
think that it is also useful that in the top right corner of the website there
is a link for teachers to look at lesson plans. I think the lesson plan will be helpful in the
classroom. The activities link in the
top left corner has very good information and will be helpful in the classroom
as well. There are tutorials and other
resources offered this section.
The
Manduca Project is very interesting. It’s
located on the right hand side right underneath the teacher lesson plans. It’s a link that teaches you about the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta. It
shows very interesting pictures and includes very good information as well. On the left hand side, there are links that
you can click on and you can learn about insects, the manduca, how to take care
of a manduca, activities, resources, etc that would be fun and entertaining in
the classroom to go over. They also
include videos that are very educational and helpful.
There is a sitemap link located right above the
subject links. It is VERY useful. It has everything very organized and laid out
properly. It makes the navigation of the
website very easy. Each subject has
included the problem sets and tutorials, the translation link (if applicable),
and activities.

Your response and recommendation for use:
I believe this website will be very useful in
the classroom for both; the teacher and students. There is a lot of information within the
website, but it’s broken up into categories where it is not so
overwhelming. I really enjoyed looking
through this website. This website is
very easy to navigate and very self-explanatory.
I
would use this website to build my knowledge on the certain subjects. I think my students would find the tutorials
very beneficial in understanding the subjects at hand.

4) Author/organization credentials:
Michael J. Farabee, Ph.D. The Online Biology Book is hosted by Estrella Mountain Community College,
in sunny Avondale, Arizona
5) Web site design and ease of navigation:
This website is very simple, but informative. It literally is what it says it is. It is an Online Biology Text Book.
The table of contents includes links that is appropriate for the information at hand. When you click on a certain link
it takes you to another screen. The other screen includes a table of contents over the subject being explained at the
top. There are links available for reviewing terms, review questions and other resources that will help students
understand the information easier.
Another good thing about this website is as you read through the information there are words that are links.
When you click on the links, it sends you to the glossary and gives you the appropriate definition for the word(s) that
you desired to learn more about. The glossary can also be viewed on the home page as well.
This website has very easy navigation. The images are very clear and the information is very reliable and useful.
Although the website is very simple, it is very useful.
The only negative thing about this website is that the information isn’t that recent. Although it’s only
been four years since it has been revised, there has been a lot that has occurred in the world and in research since
then that would be helpful for students to know.
6) Your response and recommendation for use:
I
think this website will be very useful in and outside of the classroom both for
the teacher and students. It will be
beneficial for students to be able to have access to an online book to
view/study for the subjects while at home.
This generation now is so technology savvy that is will be more
beneficial in the long run. It will be
helpful in the classroom because the teacher can navigate through the online
book during lectures or they could print off handouts that students can take
home to study or look at.
I really appreciate how
Michael J. Farabee notes at the bottom the website that he took images from
third parties and sited them throughout the text. You can tell he prepared this website for the
bettering of students. He constantly
says “for educational purposes”. It’s
very interesting to see the hit counter of the bottom of the page as well. It’s neat to see how many people have used
this website. It’s good to know that this website is actually useful and other
people are gaining knowledge from a positive website.

2) Web Site Address: http://www.biologynews.net/
3) Copyright date and/or last update: November 7, 2011 04:18 PM
4) Author/organization credentials:
There are many authors that are part of the Biology News Net. Each article has a different author
that wrote it. This website is also powered by movabletype.
5) Web site design and ease of navigation:
The navigation on this website is very user friendly. It’s easy to maneuver throughout the website
and all of the links send you to the appropriate websites. The website design is very easy and pretty unique.
The middle portion of the website contains the most recent articles. The last update was sent just yesterday
afternoon. The top of the page contains buttons that sends you to the article newsfeeds, biology jobs and the
biology forum. Below these buttons there is a way to categorize the articles by date or popularity. On either
side of the middle portion of the website there are many sections. On the right hand side the sections are
labeled; Search Bio News Net, Free biology newsletter, Latest News and Articles from the Newsfeeds, Recent
discussions about Bio News and Events, Most Popular Bio News (Biology Articles and News Last 7 days and
Biology Articles and News Last 30 days) and Biology Categories. On the left hand side of the website are sections
labeled; Biology articles published 2 days ago, Biology articles published 5 days ago and Biology articles published
7 days ago. At the very top corner of the left hand side is a tool bar where you can click on the appropriate links
and go to the Archives, Contact the Biology News Net people, Bookmark the page and etc.
6) Your response and recommendation for use:
I think this website would be beneficial for me as the teacher and for my students. I could use this website
for myself to build my knowledge of the Biology/Science world. I could also use this website as bell work for my
students. I could present them with one article a day and have them write in their journals their thoughts and any
questions that would have about that particular article. I think this would be helpful for the students, because the
information is so accurate and recent. The students would probably like doing this just because these events are
actually occurring in the world today. I think this website gives out great information. I like how there is also a link
in the top left hand corner for archives. I can look for articles that pertain to the lesson that were on focusing on at
the point in time. I can present the article at the beginning of the unit to help my students build their background
knowledge of the subject or help students be prepared for the lesson that is coming up.

5) Web site design and ease of navigation:
The main middle part of the website gives an introduction and gives an explaination about what the
website entails and tell you how you can use this website in the classroom. Below the introduction is a section
called “spotlight lessons”. These lessons all contain links that have a description of what each lesson consist
of and how it can be used in the classroom as well. A recent post section is quickly followed below. The recent
posts contain a link and the date that is was posted. There is a worksheet, photo stream, and picture gallery at
the bottom of the middle part of the website.
The website contains information on either side in the margins on both right and left sides. On the left
side you can pick between what class you are focusing on, worksheets by topic, images/media, recent post,
follow me…, educational terms and the usage terms. Each section contains links that you can click on and
they send you to the appropriate screen.
The left side contains a tool section and an education news section. Both sections also include links
that send them to other helpful websites.
This website is very easy to navigate and is very self-explanatory. All the information that I found
was very accurate and reliable enough to use in the classroom. I think students will find this website easy
to use and they will have a better understanding of the subjects at hand.
6) Your response and recommendation for use:
This website will be very
helpful in the classroom and for the teacher as well. In the classroom, the teacher can use the
“spot lessons” to show off to the class and use the lessons in the classroom. The videos and images are very educational
and will help students that are visual learners see what they are learning and
understand it better. Another neat thing
about this website is the recent post.
The recent posts are up to date and are very informative for what is
going in the world today. I also
thought that the tools section on the right side is very beneficial for
teachers and they can use the information inside their classrooms. Teachers have a lot going on and being able
to use this website to make their own worksheets (graphs, crossword puzzles,
quizzes, webwinders, etc.) will help them devote more time to helping their
students one on one than to waste time designing and organizing their own
worksheets.

Hogan. The web site is produced out of
ScienceDaily's main office in Rockville, Maryland just outside of
Washington, D.C., and is hosted on dedicated servers provided by The Planet in Dallas, Texas.
5) Web site design and ease of navigation:
This website is very easy to navigate. It can be somewhat overwhelming due there are
so many links that you can click on. This can be seen as a good thing as well. You can look at it
as there is a lot of information that you can learn more about and build your knowledge.
This website is full of tabs everywhere. The first sets of tabs are located at the top and
are labeled: News, Articles, Videos, Images and Books. Right below that set is another set categorized
as; Health and Medicine, Mind and Brain, Plants and Animals, Earth and Climate, Space and Time,
Matter and Energy, Computers and Math and Fossils and Ruins.
The Middle part of the website is where the information is placed. There is also a set of tabs
labeled; News, Articles, Videos, Images, Books, RSS and E-mail. Below the tabs are links to certain
stories and articles. Underneath is a way where you can browse through other stories and it gives
you many options to look through like; Organic Chemistry, Extreme Survival, Marine Biology, Biology,
Biochemistry, Chemistry, Schizophrenia, Parkinson's, Cats, Pests and Parasites, Disorders and Syndromes,
Microbiology and etc.
On the left hand side on the website there are labels as well. These labels correspond with
the second set of labels from the top. On the right hand side there are sections to click on for social
networks, Science video news, Breaking News, Strange Science News, Free subscriptions and Feedback.
6) Your response and recommendation for use:
Although this website is overwhelming with all of the certain tabs that you can click on it is
very good information that is presented. I could also use this website as bell work assignments as well.
Students would find this website as interesting and useful because of the information being so reliable
and recent. The information that is given is about what is going on in the world today. Most students
find it easier to understand information when they can actual see that it is going on around them and
didn’t happen 50, 100, 500, etc. years ago.
